FREE WORKSHOP....Triad Mayhem with the one and only Alfredo Guerrieri!!!!! MAY 4, 5:00-5:45

Triad Mayhem Bootcamp

As a musician, regardless of the instrument, knowing your triads (chords, chord tones, arpeggios, whatever you want to call it!) is absolutely necessary. This type of musical information is extremely important for any musician playing any style of music. Being able to verbally name those notes is just as important as being able to play/sing them on your instrument as well as being able to hear them. During the Triad Mayhem Clinic, you will get tips on how to learn your triads and the theory behind them. There are many different approaches to learning your triads, and each student learns differently, but you gotta start somewhere! Knowing these notes is the gateway into playing/singing them and making the music that is in your soul!

All instrumentalists and levels welcome. Musicians should at least have a knowledge of the musical alphabet and major scale, as well a beginner proficiency on an instrument, including vocalists.

Here’s an example:
Can you name the notes in an Eb major chord? If it takes you more than 3 seconds to answer this then come to the Bootcamp!

Matt Juskiw's Blog

Hi. My name is Matt Juskiw (jus-kew). I've been playing guitar since 2007. I just wanted to share my School of Rock.

THE SPELLING OF JUSKIW IS NOT A MISTAKE...

I started the School of Rock in the Summer Camp of 2009. I only did Session 1. I did it again in 2010 because I liked it so much. I did both sessions.

I was really psyched when I heard about the Green Day show because Green Day was, and still is, my favorite band. I did really good, and offered to substitute for anyone absent because of my knowledge of the American Idiot album. I performed in January 2011.

I loved doing the Green Day show so much that I signed up for the 80's show. I didn't get to do the 80's show due to too many people. I was signed up for the Black Sabbath show. I am currently enjoying the Black Sabbath show. I invited my ex-girlfriend to the show because she is rumored to have broke up with her boyfriend. She said yes. I am so excited to perform!! =D

We love Ozzy!! And Toni, Geezer, and Bill

To all you people on the Interweb-

This show season is coming to an end as May 14th slowly approaches. (May 14th is the first show date) Today we should be running "Sabbra Cadabra", "Changes", "Who Are You?", and "The Wizard". We ALL (this means you) need to work harder on our songs if we want to make this a good show. Progress is being made but more needs to happen. "Snowblind", "Fairies Wear Boots", "Paranoid", and "Black Sabbath" are shaping up. We haven't run "Heaven and Hell" in ages so we might not be playing it. "Sabbra Cadabra" was a mess last week. Now I must depart and wonder... (insert dramatic music here)

...who will win the Derp award this week...(insert more dramatic music here)

Kira Small & Bryan Beller rock the house!

Last night was a very special evening for School of Rock. We were lucky enough to have the amazing Kira Small and Bryan Beller grace us with their talents. Kira & Bryan have been traveling across the US putting on house concerts which is so very cool. Gretchen Hyland was gracious enough to host the evenings events at her house, and the night could not have gone any better!

The evening kicked off with our very own headliners opening the show(pic below).

Kira & Bryan then went through their 1st set which features Kira’s material, and a couple covers. I don’t know how many times I can say this but Kira’s voice is stunning, her keyboard skills rhythmic and filling, and Bryan’s bass playing out of this world! Here is a clip from the 1st set. Also, if anyone has anymore video we would love to share it, just put the link in the comments.

Bryan then started in on his bass clinic where he answered questions, told stories about his many experiences in the music industry, including a very entertaining story on his Steve Vai audition. I would have some video of this but I was too enthralled with what he was doing, I wanted to soak it all in. It was really special. Bryan went over how he wrote a few mind bending parts to his songs, and also showed some of his metal chops playing Deathklok tunes! METAL!!!! Though I don’t have video from his clinic I have this solo piece he played during the 1st set!

The night was finished with another set of Kira & Bryan, ending with Kira’s song regarding the ladies of road…Which was played earlier and so well received it was demanded again!

I would like to thank everyone who came last night, as I said you really got to witness something special. It is really cool to be able to sit down with people like Bryan & Kira and listen and learn in a setting like that. A night we won’t soon forget! To the kids that came, I am very proud of you not only for taking an interest in Kira & Brian, but also for representing SoR Cleveland the way you did.

We hope to see them back here soon!

They now hang on our wall of fame!

If you did not pick up a disc last night or were unable to go please check them out. They both have new discs out, I have listened to both and they kick so much ass! BUY THEM!

You can order them at their websites below.

We LOVE 80's

Hello all!

80's went well considering many of us were gone for spring break. (Insert thunderous applause here) We found out the results of our "Eye of the Tiger" audition.(Insert drum roll here) Alex and myself are splitting it!!! (Insert more thunderous applause here) Most of our songs are improving (somewhat). Dani was sick this week so we hope to have her back on Thursday. We still have a few songs that need to be cast so let's work hard and get them cast because I know we ALL want more songs.

So with that being said I hope to see ALL of you who are reading this at the 80's show on May 14th and May 21st at the Beachland Ballroom. Make sure you also support our dear friends in the Black Sabbath show on May 14th and 15th, the Funky Soul show on May 21st and 22nd, and of course all of the brilliant West side shows!!!

Later peoples!

School of Rock Beginner Guitar Camp!!!!

This camp is going to be the greatest single event in the span of human history!!! Forget the Great Pyramids at Giza or the Hanging Gardens of Babylon... we've got Beginner Guitar Camp!!!!! We are gonna get these kids jamming and rockin' out in a few short days!!!! First we teach them all about the guitar's anatomy as well as cleaning/maintenance. From there we will move onto proper tuning, basic chords and progressions, and a few covers. These students are going to experience first-hand what it is like to be in a band as they jam along with fellow students and instructors. All of this will culminate in a showcase on Friday for their parents and friends where they can munch on some snacks while they rock out a few tunes for their adoring audience.

- Sincerely Yours,

The Sultan of Shred, The Titan of Taste, The Beast of the Blues- LYLE :-)=

Funk and Soul

We are in the wonderful Funky Soul rehearsal, and I am blogging.  Hannah's feet look cold and Mason is Superfly.  Nobody's here because of Spring Break so it is kinda empty.  I was just on a song where there were like 15 to 20 people, with tons of percussion and I am with Hannah in the skillful hand claps.  As Chris would say, it was uplifting!

Triad mayhem!!!!!

Hello dearest school of rock people, Alfredo here.  As an experiment I have been asking all of my private students and the occassional random student walking by in a musical haze to name me some chords/triads/arpeggios/chord tones/whatever you want to call it.  For example, name me the notes in a F# major chord?  Now, I would ask them these questions without their particular instrument in front of them.  This changes the game a little bit.  Now, I got some quick and correct answers, some slow and drawn out answers, or the complete blank stare followed by an uneducated guess (the answer is F# A# C# if you didn't know).  Unacceptable fredo says!!!

This type of musical information is extremely important for any musician playing any style of music.  Being able to verbally name those notes is just as important as being able to play/sing them on your instrument as well as being able to hear them.  For example, if I have my guitar/piano/bass students learn a song by ear I expect them to be able to hear if there is a major or minor chord being played.  As a guitarist/pianist it is important because obviously you play the chords, but it also gives you an idea of what notes to play during a solo or a melody.  Not every song uses a single minor pentatonic scale to solo over.  As a bassist, playing roots is pretty boring and pretty easy to be honest.  To add some flavor to the pot of bass stew, adding those 'chord tones' is important.  Listen to anything by The Beatles, The Police or Led Zeppelin and you will know what I'm talking about.  Paul McCartney is a master of this.  For vocalists it's obviously important since most of the harmonies you sing are these exact notes that I mention, 3rds and 5ths!! Drummers?  They just hit things.  I kid.

I'll give you a taste as to how I remember these chords.  There are many ways to learn these.  The first is by just going down the musical alphabet and skipping every other note.  For example, if you are trying to figure out a 'C' major chord, C is your first note, skip D, E is your 2nd note or the '3rd' of the chord, skip F, and G is the 3rd note or '5th' of the chord.  Using this process narrows down your choices dramatically.  Now how do we know if 'E' or 'G' are correct or if they should be sharped or flattened??  That's for next time.

Bassists: this song is definitely a perfect example of this.  Imagine if Paul just played roots the whole time?  Boring!

Funk and Soul

So far we have a total of 19 songs. Based on the practice from yesterday, This should be a really good show. Based on other practices from previous, im not so sure. All of the songs that we are doing are awesome and all the ones that we havn't casted yet are also awesome. with our sax player, Jeremy, playing a real sax sounds great compared to the fake key boards. Some of the harmonies are off and a good amount of structure isn't quite on but we'll get. And it will awesome.

A Day In The Life Of Black Sabbath

My dearest blog,

Sabbath is so enjoyable. 'Snowblind' went well for once. Nick enjoyed a day of yelling at Reese's, as usual.  Drew played some drums. They were OK. Jonathan did push ups. Jared still hasn't tried out for American Idol, sadly. He has the charisma to go far. Anyhow, Nick still has trouble telling Joey and Jesse apart. Now back to the music. Black Sabbath has a song called 'Black Sabbath' off of their album 'Black Sabbath'. The first 4 and a half minutes of the song are the same three notes repeated. Its fun. 'War Pigs' is yet to be played but I'm sure it will blow the minds of anyone who has the pleasure of having the sound waves produced from our instruments touch their eardrums. Well ta-ta blog. I bid thee a warm farewell. I will hopefully be able to make it to our date on Thursday.

Love,
Matt "Reese's" Reesing and the Sabbath Crew.

80's update - Highland Heights

Well, welcome to this week's SOR Blog. Today, the set list looks something like this: Boys Don't Cry by The Cure, Jenny by Tommy Tutone, You Might Think by The Cars, Epic by Faith No More, and so on. Ahh, the good old 80's. We can always rely on them to brighten up our day :-) Change of plans. We are doing Jenny first and the Cars tune next.
We have just started Melt With You by Modern English. The vocalists are harmonizing and we are all having fun. Look at the bottom to see our definition of fun. Anyways, here is a little joke: How does music influence life? Scroll to the bottom to see the answer. Okay, now back to business. In Rebel Yell by Billy Idol,  Amanda showed us how to sing! Way to go, Amanda! Okay, that's all for today! Goodnight, folks! :)

Here are some pictures of what we think is fun!
Talk to you later...Dani Murthy

Led Zeppelin Recap!

Soooo, the Led Zeppelin rehearsal went pretty good.  We practiced most of our songs, and most of them were pretty great.  Stairway needs some work but we’ll get it done, cause we’re awesome.  The rest of the songs got casted today!! YAAAY! If we all learn our stuff, then Dave might possibly be adding some songs too… but we have a time limit, not cool L. Anyways, we had Dazed and Confused vocal auditions today, and I believe about seven people tried out.  Everyone did greeeeaaaat! But in the end Quinn and Alexis go the part.  Quinn will sing it one show, and Alexis will sing it the next. :D Belle won the lead on the Whole Lotta Love song and the rest of the girls might get some parts in it too. I love Maggie Haffey…. Just sayin’. (that was Maggie that typed that by the way) SOO basically everyone’s doin’ great, and working hard. We’ll be sure to keep up the good work.

P.s. the drummers are the best…..

The Best Blog Ever - 80's

OK everyone, this is this week's School Of Rock blog!!! (Applause)
So, as you remember from last week, we were just starting to improve our many songs here in the 80s show (which is the show you should be doing).
Well here we are again, and we're getting even better. So far today we've rehearsed many of your favorite 80s songs, like "Our Lips Are Sealed" by the Go-Gos, "Epic" by Faith No More, and "Burning Down The House" by The Talking Heads. These 80s songs remind us just how old we really are...agh!
Anyway, right now we're doing "Photograph" by Def Leppard in the big room. We still have another hour of rehearsal, so we'll soon practice "Home Sweet Home," "End of the World," and "Boys Don't Cry." Next week, we'll try "You Might Think I'm Crazy" by the Cars. We can't wait to update you again, so see ya later.
Wish you were here.   :)

80's Rehearsal

80's
By Alex Smallwood
aka justin bieber

Auditions for I'll Melt With You by Modern English were held.  Kyle and Alex (myself) auditioned and we both got to share the song. We ran over all the songs except for Burning Down The House by The Talking Heads.  Some of the songs we went over were Talk Dirty To Me by Poison, Home Sweet Home by Motley Crue, Your Love by The Outfield, Power By Love by Huey Lewis and End Of The World by REM.

Most of the songs were ok.  But Fredo and Nick did not think they were "suitable" for all the time that we have had to practice for the songs.  So I guess we all have to practice alot more.  Cell phones seem to be a problem too.  Everyone keeps getting caught with one.  Maybe we need practice putting them in the basket!

We didn't get any more songs to learn for this week because the songs aren't good enough.  That's pretty much it.  I hope we get better and do more songs and I "Belieb" we will.

Peace out,
Alex

Five Wintertime Tips for your Voice

Chill Out and Sing!
Five Wintertime Tips to Keep Your Voice Healthy and Strong in the Cold.

The Cleveland winter keeps on coming, but don't let it silence all you vocalists out there. Here are a few tips that will lift your voice up while the snow falls.

Warm Up! Cold air slows down your circulatory system, and limits the amount of oxygen that gets through your body. Be sure to properly and thoroughly warm up early and often - not just before you sing.

Thaw Out! Did you know that 90% of the heat that leaves your body in cold weather comes from your head? Make sure your winter hats and scarfs are on before you venture out, and that all the muscles in your face are warm and ready to go - they're an important part of your instrument!

The Melted Stuff's Good! The winter months are notorious for making the air very dry, so don't forget to hydrate yourself. Plenty of water is a great idea, but also remember to keep your skin moisturized - singing with chapped lips is no fun. Look into a good humidifier for your home. It makes a huge difference.

Too Hot! Many vocalists find that a cup of tea or hot water help before displaying their singing chops, but don't go overboard. Drinking liquids hotter than your body temperature (98.6 degrees) right before singing actually hurts your voice instead of helping it. Also - if you need a drink during a performance, make sure its water, and that its around room temperature.

Sing Safe! Unfortunately, winter is also the season of the Flu, and no matter how hard you try to fight it, chances are you'll get sick at some point. When your sick, your body weakens all around, because energy is diverted to the immune system to fight those nasty viruses. It's important that if and when you get sick, you give your voice plenty of rest, and refrain from over-singing. This is for your safety, as well as the safety of everyone around you who doesn't want your germs!

202's rehearsal

Our 202 group is starting to finally sound like a group!  Musically, the students have a good grasp with the structure and feel, however,  our rhythm section has some work to do on AC/DC's "Live Wire".

- The drums and bass have to work together on this song. Now................The drums in this tune may sound like they are the easiest thing in the world to play, but........ don't be fooled kids!!!  They have to be played TIIIIIIIGGGGGGGHHHHHHT.  There is no room for dynamic with this.  Phil Rudd (The Drummer of ACDC) is a machine.  Probably one of the tightest rock n roll drummers.  We are aiming to have the drums sound close to this.  This way we don't get tomatoes  thrown at us during the performance.

-Vocally, we are working on the attitude.  Bon Scott is one of those vocalists that are hard to copy due to his mastery of attitude and sleezyness (I think sleezyness is a word.... If it is... it would mean playful).  No monotone sounding vocals here!  Lets hear some aggression and attitude kids!!

-There still is a good amount of work to do here but I think we are working with enough talent to pull this off.  Lezzzzzzzzz doooooooooooo it!!!!!!!  Thats all for now. Later for now peepz

Rehearsal Reviews

Hello all!
I will be blogging for the Black Sabbath and 80's shows and Headliners!

Headliners- First of all, congratulations goes to Connnor Powelson for making Headliners!!! Take it from me, it's hard. We have a gig on Saturday the 19th at Peabody's at 6:00pm. So support your fellow School of Rockers and watch us bring the house down... ...or at least make the roof catch on fire.

Black Sabbath- Rehearsal is going very well. At least in my opinion it is. War Pigs is REALLY shaping up thanks to Nick's insane but genius mind. Singers are getting the Ozzy Osbourne singing technique. Awesome!

80's- Good job for the first few weeks. We got past the first 15 seconds in Power of Love so that's an improvement. Awesome high singing on Your Love Alex. Again, awesome job everyone!!!

Later,
Amanda

CALLING ALL HORN PLAYERS......SCHOOL OF ROCK - CLEVELAND WELCOMES BETTYJEANE WISCHMEIER

Bettyjeane Wischmeier earned a Bachelor of Music and K-12 teaching license from Cleveland State University in 2005. For the past ten years, Bettyjeane has taught both saxophone and clarinet  privately and worked with several schools in Northeast Ohio.  In addition to teaching, she has performed, recorded and toured with many local Cleveland bands and some National musicians as well such as; Mifune (Afro-Electonique) , Carlos Jones and the PLUS Band, Twist, Shout, Swing City Big Band, The Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians, The Temptations, The Mojo Generations Big Band, Latin Jazz Artist Bobby Sanabria and other small combo projects. In addition, she co- designed a K-5 Afro-Beat Assembly and Workshop through Young Audiences with her former performing ensemble, Mifune.

Currently she is completing her Masters in Music Education from C.S.U, and is the Assistant Marching Band Director for Beachwood High School.  She is also an independent contractor assisting with 5-12 band in the Beachwood school district.  Bettyjeane’s newest musical project is a six piece horn band and rhythm section with MC Jason Sirrhan Walker called “J Hope and the Champion Sound” who recently performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for MLK Day.  She had the pleasure of sharing the stage with former guitarist of the Dazz Band, Michael Calhoun that day, which gave her the opportunity to arrange horn parts for his upcoming solo album. Her personal teaching goal is to inspire young musicians and give them an opportunity to express themselves while having fun and learning the fundamentals of their instrument at the same time.

She is now currently teaching Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone and Clarinet at our Rocky River and Highland Heights locations!!!  Call for more info :-)

Funk and Soul

We're on our third week of Funk and Soul rehearsal here at The School of Rock East! This show is awesome because School of Rock has never done one like this before. Those of us who dared to join the show are looking to improve our way of life by adding funk and soul.

Another exciting factor about this show is that there is a lot of opportunity for horn parts! We even have a new horn instructor at the school: Bettyjeane Wischmeier. What's even more important is that we have this kid named Jeremey and he ONLY plays sax. Alto sax. So he's probably gonna be on every song in the show. Which is awesome!!  But also tiring. I can't speak for him though.

This show is so out of our comfort zone...I think I can safely say that  none of us have any experience in the funk and soul world. We're all learning so much though, which is good. Because then we're gonna be better musicians. Which is after all... why we're here....

I have to go sing now

This is Hannah Scully signing off....

Led Zeppelin update from SoR student Sarah!

The rehearsal went pretty good today.  Everyone in our show basically knows all of their parts and we nailed a lot of our songs, but there’s still a lot of polishin’ to be done, but we’re working at it.  Today we played a bunch of the songs casted such as Kashmir, Stairway, No Quarter, and a lot of other awesome songs.  Kashmir kicked butt, nough said.  Everyone in this show seems really motivated, and who wouldn’t be? It’s Led Zeppelin. We’re all pumped for the show, even though we still have 12 weeks to go.  Hope we can keep up the good work!

Welcome to the School of Rock Blog!

Welcome!  We are the School of Rock!  You are probably wondering, what is the School of Rock?!?!  Well I will tell you.  The School of Rock is the nation's premier performance-based rock music program.  We accept students of all ages, from beginners to advanced.  Students in our regular program receive a weekly 45 minute private lesson on the instrument of their choice.  They also participate in weekly 3 hour supervised rehearsals with some of the most talented professional musicians in the area.  These rehearsals and lessons prepare the students for the main event, which is the SHOWS!  The shows have a variety of themes.  Some of the shows that we have done recently are Women Who Rock, Green Day, Wacky Trax, The Who, Queen, Punk, and Led Zeppelin.

Students in our introductory 101 and 202 programs also receive a weekly 45 minute lesson as well as a 90 minute supervised rehearsal.  The goal in these programs is to get them into the regular program, but also to PLAY MUSIC!!

We have two schools in the Cleveland area.  One is in Rocky River, the other in Highland Heights.  If you would like to contact either schools, the numbers are below:

Rocky River: 440-333-7625
Highland Heights: 440-684-7625

Anyways, enough of the business.  My name is Alfredo, and I am one of the instructors at the Highland Heights school.  Students, teachers and everyone in between will be using this blog to talk about all that is School of Rock and music in general.  Currently, I am running the 80's show on the east side.  We are currently in our 2nd week, and running songs by bands such as Motley Crue, Poison, Faith No More, R.E.M., Billy Idol, and Huey Lewis.  Nick is my assistant Director, and he is really bummed that Green Bay won the Super Bowl because he is a Bears fan.  Poor Nick! Anyways, more exciting people than myself will be updating this blog periodically.  Hope you enjoy!!
